Pretrial Justice

Pretrial justice 1The Constitution guarantees all citizens equal protection under the law. Yet the bail system discriminates against minority and low-income individuals. The idea that a person’s financial status can influence the severity of their punishment is a troubling and thoroughly undemocratic proposition.

CCDI advocates for change to the pretrial justice system including non-monetary bail options, mandatory risk assessments before judges set bail, access to courts for reconsideration of bail decisions, the elimination of mandatory sentences for bond violations and increased availability of attorneys for all those in custody.

Read CCDI’s 2015 Report: Colorado Jail Stories, which includes personal stories about how the pretrial “justice” system failed Coloradans.
